The Carrasqueira stilt fishing village, a special place

At first glance, it might seem like we're in a Southeast Asian location, but we're not. We are in the small fishing village of Carrasqueira, on Comporta, in the municipality of Alcácer do Sal. Carrasqueira stilt fishing port stays on Sado Estuary Nature Reserve and it's a truly fascinating construction.

First and foremost, it is important to explain that this type of construction is called stilt – daí o nome cais palafítico – e é usado em edificações localizadas em regiões alagadiças cuja função é evitar que as casas sejam arrastadas pela corrente dos rios. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Embora seja frequente vermos este tipo de casas em países asiáticos e africanos, surpreende-nos ver um lugar como este na Europa, especificamente em Portugal. Por isso, não é de estranhar que o cais palafítico atraia tantos curiosos, apaixonados pela fotografia e até observadores de aves.

This maze of platforms, strangely balanced on thin wooden stakes, that seem to defy gravity but are firm and secure, was erected during the 1950s and 1960s. The intention was for them to serve as mooring points for the region's fishing boats – a function they continue to fulfil to this day.

No Sado Estuary, the low tide is very pronounced and the fishermen found it extremely difficult to cross the riverbed mud to reach the river waters. So, as necessity sharpens ingenuity, some fishermen had the idea of building a wooden walkway to overcome this obstacle and access their boats more easily. [/vc_column_text][sohohotel_title title=”O cais palafítico da Carrasqueira”][vc_column_text]Aqui, começou por se apanhar amêijoas, ostras, lingueirão e outros mariscos. Contudo, à medida que o tempo foi passando, o número de pescadores no cais palafítico foi aumentando, o que fez com que as estruturas de madeira fossem ampliadas até se tornarem no emaranhado de passadiços que são hoje.

Depending on the tides, the boats float on the water or get stuck in the mud, but the fishermen never lose access to their vessels, which was the main objective.

Sobre as estruturas de madeira, encontramos pequenas casas de madeira, que servem de arrecadação, onde os pescadores guardam os seus materiais de trabalho. Depending on the time and day, it's common to find fishermen on the stilt pier selling oysters, clams, and other shellfish at prices much more inviting than in the market or restaurant. When we went, in August 2022, there were oysters for €5 per kilo and clams for €7.5.

For those interested in birdwatching, this is also a special place, as various interesting species of the Sado estuary can be found here: oystercatchers, egrets, glossy ibises, cormorants, whimbrels, black-headed gulls, and many others.

Se estiver de passagem pela Comporta, vale a pena visitar o cais palafítico da Carrasqueira, um lugar imperdível para descobrir em qualquer época do ano. It is very easy to get to the Carrasqueira stilt jetty. The location is in Carrasqueira, and it's approximately 5 kilometres from Comporta, about a 10-minute drive away.

Located within the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, it's best to go by car. Whether coming from Tróia or Alcácer do Sal, simply follow the signs towards Carrasqueira. From there, there are directions to the stilted quay.
