SUBWINE: “Wine of the Sea”, discover the underwater cellar of Porto Covo
A Blue World learned how wine is being aged underwater in Porto Covo and visits this incredible underwater winery created by ECOALGA!
Discovering a wine cellar at sea, next to the poetic island of Pessegueiro, is one of the attractions that liven up Porto Covo, one of the best-known fishing villages on the Alentejo coast.
It was this wonderful pretext that brought Jonathan Bird to the Alentejo to dive into the Alentejo coast and, needless to say, he was amazed by this adventure.

The birth of something unique.
Initiated in 2013, the proposal to create a wine from the region, aged in a marine environment, underwater, was motivated by the creation of added value based on the characteristics
the biochemistry of ocean water, the influence of pressure and immersion time.
The evolution of the product (wine) and the characterisation of the bottle are the goals to be achieved with this Vinhos do Mar project.
The experiment began in 2015, with the placement of 4 specimens that demonstrated a very interesting evolution.
Presenting these results, a thesis relating time to the depth of the internship.
The potential of the packaging's characterisation, which became the brand image of this innovative product, was realised.
In 2016, a further batch of 200 bottles was placed for trials at a defined depth and the result was surprisingly positive, given the characteristic acquired by the
The wine surpassed expectations, leading to the creation of a brand for its marketing.
