Grândola Council Day

22nd October is Council Day, marking 479 years since Grândola was granted its Town Charter. This day will be celebrated with the Flag Raising ceremony at the Town Hall at 11:00. This will be followed at 11:30, at the Grandolense Cinema-Theatre, by the Presentation of the Commemorative Programme for the 50th Anniversary of the 25th of April.

The book launch, held last Saturday, the 7th, of Cândido Matos Gago's book «A Indústria Corticeira em Grândola e a Cooperativa Militão» at the Casa Mostra de Produtos Endógenos, at 6:00 PM, marked the start of the commemorative initiatives for Council Day, which extend until the end of the month.

From the programme, a highlight on the 13th at 6:00 PM in the Library and Archive is the inauguration of the exhibition «Os Passos de Grândola, Vila Morena». Produced by the Municipality of Grândola, it is dedicated to the history of the poem-song that helped transform Portugal into a democracy. «Cantar de Novo» with Edmundo Inácio and Fernando Tordo is the commemorative concert for Council Day, scheduled for the 21st at 9:30 PM at Cine Granadeiro. This musical segment aims to showcase performances by composers and performers who used song as an instrument to combat the dictatorships of Salazar and Marcello Caetano. It also features concerts by new artists, safeguarding the memory and valuing present-day protest songs.

On October 26th, at 9:30 PM, Cine Granadeiro will host «VAGAR,» a Cante and Jazz concert featuring 8 singers and 8 instrumentalists. «VAGAR» is a creation by Carlos Martins with texts by José Luís Peixoto and photography by José Manuel Rodrigues, blending Cante with Jazz/Sea and Plain.
